Abstract
The effect of local zinc oxide application in open wounds was studied in normal rats. No significant difference in rate of reepithelialization and healing was observed between zinc-treated and control wounds studied for more than 21 days. A significantly more rapid healing was found in cephalad wounds in comparison to caudad wounds. Serum zinc levels in the rats showed a significant rise of 85% over the 3-week period, indicating zinc absorption through the wound.
